Roberto Martinez joined Wigan in 1995 and managed them to a 1-0 FA Cup victory over Manchester City in 2013, despite the club's relegation that season. Martinez later joined Everton, was sacked three years later, then managed Belgium and became Portugal manager in January 2023, guiding Portugal to a Nations League title. Portugal later mourned the deaths of forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car crash in northern Spain, and Martinez said the team "want to honour his memory every day".
