914 miles, 185 fans - doing English football's longest away day
"This is exactly why we love football - for the adventure,"
"Since we came up, loads of teams have been complaining about having to come down here because of how far away it is, but we happily do it every other week."
"It's another level of being a supporter. I went with my dad for decades, but he passed away. We don't have that many fans, so you get to know everyone at the games. I met these guys and travel with them now. Football is what binds us. It gives you relationships you otherwise wouldn't."
Truro City, promoted to the National League for the first time, travelled to Gateshead with 185 supporters making a 914-mile round-trip, the furthest journey in English league football. Fans departed at dawn from a windy car park, sharing Cornish pasties and planning stops en route with an expected early evening arrival in Newcastle. The team met at Exeter, travelled by executive coach, scheduled a training session at Derby County's training ground, and stayed overnight in Darlington before the match. Supporters describe the trips as adventurous and community-building, with close relationships formed among a small, dedicated fanbase.
