On Tuesday, a snowboarder at Mount Washington's Tuckerman Ravine captured the attention of the public after managing to outrun a small avalanche, an event recorded by a wildlife camera. The Mount Washington Observatory confirmed that no injuries occurred. This event highlights the dangerous conditions prevalent in mountainous areas, especially as spring approaches and temperatures rise, which can destabilize snowpack. The observatory noted that Thursday's warm weather likely contributed to the slide and warned of increased avalanche risks.
“Although it may look significant, this was a small slide, and everyone involved was ok!” said the observatory, emphasizing the snowboarder's safety.
“Yesterday's above freezing temperatures are likely what decreased stability in the slab, causing the snow to slide”, indicating the weather's role in avalanche risk.
