"Rising dramatically on the west side of Golden, the resort clings to a craggy ridge like it was carved straight from the Purcells-steep faces, tight tree shots down low, and wide-open alpine bowls and chutes above. Even from the highway, it radiated promise."
"With every turn, anticipation built. At the base, any lingering concern evaporated. Ten to twelve inches of new snow had fallen overnight. The village buzzed with that unmistakable storm-day electricity-goggles on helmets, strangers grinning at strangers, and all around excitement."
"At the summit, wind and snow reduced visibility to near whiteout. But Kicking Horse rewards decisiveness. Drop off the ridge quickly, and the world transforms. Just below the crest, visibility improved dramatically."
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, located west of Golden in British Columbia, features dramatic terrain carved into the Purcells with steep faces, tight tree shots, and expansive alpine bowls. During a winter visit, skiers encountered ten to twelve inches of overnight snowfall despite initial low clouds and rain in town. The resort's elevation gain and positioning create a microclimate where conditions improve dramatically with altitude. The Catamount Chair provided immediate access without lines during the storm, while the gondola underwent avalanche mitigation. At Eagle's Eye Peak's summit, whiteout conditions gave way to excellent visibility and skiing conditions just below the ridge crest, rewarding skiers who committed to descending quickly.
