"A 31-year-old Jackson man has died from injuries sustained in a December 20 avalanche on Teton Pass, despite an intense rescue effort that involved his ski partner, another party, and Teton County Search and Rescue, reports the Jackson Hole News & Guide. Nathaniel "Natty" Schneider was skiing with a partner in "The Claw," a steep, north-facing couloir complex on the south side of the pass known for its consequential terrain and persistent avalanche risk."
"Authorities received multiple 911 calls around 2:30 p.m. on December 20 reporting a skier burial in The Claw. Schneider's partner quickly located him and began excavation, joined shortly afterward by a passerby who assisted with CPR. Sheriff Matt Carr, who served as incident commander that day, described the companion's actions as "heroic," citing the complexity of terrain, deep snow, and tree entanglement that made extraction exceptionally difficult."
"Search and Rescue's helicopter launched within 30 minutes of the initial alert. Dr. A.J. Wheeler led the medical team that reached the debris field and provided advanced life support using a mechanical compression device before short-hauling Schneider to the highway at the top of Teton Pass. He was transported to St. John's Health, stabilized, and then life-flighted to Idaho Falls. The avalanche forecast for the day was 'considerable', with the BTAC warning, "Dangerous avalanche conditions exist in the backcountry. Skiers and riders can trigger slab avalanche""
A skier was fully buried by a slide that released above 8,500 feet in a steep, north-facing couloir known as The Claw on Teton Pass. Multiple 911 calls around 2:30 p.m. prompted an immediate response; the skier's partner located and began excavating him while a passerby assisted with CPR. Teton County Search and Rescue launched a helicopter within 30 minutes and the medical team provided advanced life support, short-hauling the patient before ground transport and a life flight to Idaho Falls. The Bonneville County Coroner attributed death to multisystem trauma. The avalanche forecast that day was considerable with explicit warnings about triggerable slab avalanches.
