The avalanche that struck a construction camp in Uttarakhand claimed the lives of at least eight workers, with rescuers conducting a challenging operation in severe weather conditions. Initially, 55 workers were thought to be trapped, but the number was revised after one worker was found safe. Rescue efforts were supported by drone technology and rescue dogs, reflecting a profound challenge in remote, snow-laden terrain. Survivors described their terrifying experiences, revealing the precarious nature of their living conditions on a vital infrastructure project near the Tibet border.
Many of those trapped were migrant labourers working on a highway expansion project covering a 50km stretch from Mana to Mana Pass. They were living on site in steel containers considered stronger than tents.
The container that construction worker Anil and his colleagues were in began to slide down. The way we were engulfed in snow, we had no hope of surviving, he said.
