Your Art Can Go in This San Francisco Alley
""I couldn't insure it," says JJ Hollingsworth, the alley's then-reluctant owner. "It was just a big liability hanging over my head and it caused me a lot of concern and stress, oh my gosh.""
""We want to let everybody, the whole internet, paint this street." - Patrick Hultquist"
A couple in San Francisco accidentally purchased an 82-foot easement for $25,000, believing it was developable land. The owner, JJ Hollingsworth, faced stress due to the liability of the purchase. Local tech pranksters then bought the alley for $26,000 and invested an additional $10,000 to pave it. They launched a project called Paint a Street, inviting online artists to submit digital drawings for a collaborative art installation on the road, allowing internet users to vote on their favorite pieces.
