Austin is planning to revise its Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) rules, potentially designating 71% of the city’s land parcels as at risk for wildfire damage. This revision is a response to worsening conditions of hotter summers and severe droughts, positioning Austin as the fifth city nationwide facing high wildfire risks. The current wildfire risk map will be updated to broaden Zone C, indicating a significant geographical shift in potential fire danger, particularly impacting areas like South Austin and near downtown.
"We're sitting on the edge of a major catastrophic fire," said Randy Denzer, a former battalion chief with the Austin Fire Department. "This isn't too far-fetched."
The move would put 71 percent of the city's land parcels in a zone vulnerable to burning should a wildfire break out... up from 38 percent a decade ago.
