A home-built Vans RV-10 airplane crashed in Simi Valley, California, killing the pilot and damaging two nearby homes. The accident occurred around 2:10 p.m. on Saturday as the aircraft was en route from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster to Camarillo Airport. Despite the severity of the crash, residents inside the homes were unharmed. About 40 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the fire caused by the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the incident, along with the FAA.
The pilot died in the crash, Ventura County Fire Department Public Information Officer Andrew Dowd told reporters at a news conference.
Shelby Joice told ABC News she lives across the street from where the plane crashed. She said she and her mother were watching TV when they heard what sounded like a helicopter passing over.
