Silicon Valley BART project gets millions in funding, but still short - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

The VTA is working to address a significant budget shortfall in the Silicon Valley BART expansion, estimated between $700 million and $1 billion. Despite receiving approximately $100 million in grants from the California Transportation Commission, the public transit agency continues to seek additional savings on the $12.75 billion project. Plans include changing contractors for the tunnel boring component to reduce costs. VTA Board Chair Sergio Lopez expressed support for the funding while emphasizing the need for further cost-cutting measures as construction progresses.
VTA officials said they've negotiated with Kiewit Shea Traylor for about 18 months, but their prices were nearly twice what VTA could afford.
Construction has begun at the Newhall Maintenance Yard where Kiewit Shea Traylor is building the launch structure for the tunnel boring machine.
