New bike lanes on El Camino Real removed roughly 500 curbside parking spaces and created parking shortages that impede local business operations. City Transportation Planning Manager Nate Baird acknowledged inability to replace all lost spaces and described efforts to balance competing curb uses while locating alternative parking nearby. McLaren's service shop lost space for transporter trucks to legally park and unload cars, forcing drivers to risk tickets and deliveries to stop at red curbs. Stanford Coin Wash reported reduced customers and revenue because 'No Parking' restrictions hinder loading bulky laundry, especially affecting elderly and disabled patrons. The city approved parking-permit changes for Evergreen Park–Mayfield on Aug. 11 to help businesses.
"The changes we're making really are balancing a lot of competing interests for limited curb space, so where we've been able to help we've tried to do so," Baird said.
"But many folks wish that they had the previous supply still available."
"A laundromat's business model relies heavily on customers' ability to load and unload bulky and heavy items," Lee said. "Customers often arrive with multiple large bags or baskets of laundry, and the 'No Parking' restriction makes it extremely difficult, and in some cases impossible, for them to access my business."
