Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, has contributed $50 million to Bowdoin College to support artificial intelligence initiatives, marking the largest donation in the college's history. This investment will enable the hiring of 10 new faculty members and fund AI-centric curricula, workshops, and events. Hastings emphasized the importance of early engagement with AI, noting its potential to significantly impact humanity. Bowdoin's president highlighted the necessity of reflecting on human cognition and the objectives of AI systems as this technology evolves, underscoring the urgency of these discussions.
This donation seeks to advance Bowdoin's mission of cultivating wisdom for the common good by deepening the College's engagement with one of humanity's most transformative developments: artificial intelligence.
As AI advances, it will be important to ask what we 'value in human cognition' and what we want our AI systems to do—or not do—in service to humanity.
The AI change, I think, will be much bigger than the social networking change. So it's important to get started early before we're overwhelmed by the problems.
We're going to be fighting for the survival of humanity and the flourishing of humanity.
