A lawsuit alleges that Valley Water CEO Rick Callender used public funds to sponsor the NAACP California-Hawaii State Conference, a group he oversees. Salena Pryor, a colleague of Callender's at NAACP, claims he created a hostile work environment as she organized events, including facing late-night calls and public shaming. The lawsuit mentions Callender instructed her to seek a $5,000 sponsorship from Valley Water for an event but later denied his instructions. Valley Water is currently investigating allegations of misconduct against Callender while he is on administrative leave.
The conflict of interest claim comes from a civil complaint filed March 20 by Salena Pryor, an NAACP colleague who worked under Callender in his capacity as the statewide NAACP chapter president.
President Callender emphasized the need to keep his involvement discreet, and later denied instructing Pryor to request funds for the NAACP.
