Cupertino, one of the last cities in Santa Clara County to adopt license plate detection technology, has approved the installation of 15 cameras to aid the sheriff’s office. These devices will read license plates and assist in tracking stolen vehicles and criminal activity by connecting to multiple databases. Concerns about data handling led one supervisor to abstain from the vote. The cameras are slated for key locations over the next few months and are expected to improve crime prevention in the tech-centric town.
"It's always hard to have enough staff to do the patrols, so I look at this technology as a way to help us catch criminals in the act."
"The cameras, which will be placed at 15 locations, allow police to track stolen vehicles or those linked to crimes without capturing faces..."
