Wave goodbye to ESA's retiring Milky Way mapper
Briefly

The European Space Agency's Milky Way mapper Gaia has completed its mission’s sky-scanning phase with over three trillion observations, reshaping our understanding of the galaxy.
Launched on December 19, 2013, Gaia aimed to create a three-dimensional map of the Milky Way, surveying nearly two billion objects over almost a decade.
As Gaia prepares for its passivation on March 27, 2025, it will make itself visible through small telescopes, allowing amateur astronomers to bid farewell.
Gaia has provided remarkable insights, mapping 1.3 million quasars and delivering over 142TB of data to the scientific community, with more data releases expected.
