More than a dozen demonstrators protested outside a high-profile dinner at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park where UCSF marked the 10th anniversary of the Weill Institute for Neurosciences. The protesters, primarily members of the University Professional and Technical Employees union representing recently laid-off staff, chanted and distributed flyers detailing 28 job cuts and warning that critical research into neurodegenerative diseases could be halted. The layoffs eliminated 26 staff positions and two faculty positions, including researchers, chemists, biologists, and animal health technicians. An animal health technician joined to support colleagues and emphasized their passion and dedication.
