The recovery of the last of the 43 rhesus macaques that escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemassee, South Carolina, marks the conclusion of a notable incident that captured national media attention. The monkeys had escaped in November, surviving harsh winter conditions. By mid-November, 39 had been returned to the facility. Upon recovery, Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard confirmed that the monkeys, primarily young and healthy, were kept for breeding and research purposes but had not yet been involved in testing procedures.
The last of the 43 monkeys that escaped from a South Carolina research facility late last year have been recovered, according to the local police department, putting an end to a dramatic saga that launched a small town into the national spotlight.
