Spinal stimulation restored muscles wasted by rare genetic disorder
Briefly

A study in Nature Medicine demonstrated that daily electrical stimulation of spinal nerves improved leg muscle strength and mobility in three SMA patients. One participant, Doug McCullough, reported feeling "supercharged" after treatment. Though current SMA medications can slow the disease, they do not reverse symptoms, making spinal stimulation a valuable addition. Researchers believe this technique could also benefit stroke survivors and individuals with ALS and Parkinson's disease. As a progressive disease, SMA traditionally only leads to deterioration, highlighting the significance of this trial's promising results for improved quality of life.
