New Zealand's White Island volcano erupts, flights grounded
Briefly

Scientists have warned that the White Island volcano, known as Whakaari, could continue venting for weeks to months, affecting air travel and posing minor health risks.
The GNS Science institute noted that recent volcanic activity aligns with typical eruptive cycles on Whakaari, and they anticipate continued emissions from the volcano.
Following the alert raised to level three, the National carrier reported that at least ten flights were canceled due to volcanic ash drifting across domestic airports.
Historically, Whakaari was a popular tourist site until a tragic eruption in 2019 killed 22 visitors, leading to its closure for safety reasons.
