NASA readies the X-59 for its first supersonic flight, SpaceX's Starship grounded and more science stories - Engadget
NASA’s X-59 quiet supersonic research plane will begin supersonic testing in early June, reaching over 630 mph at about 43,000 feet. A subsequent mission-conditions test targets 925 mph (Mach 1.4) at roughly 55,000 feet. The final planned phase aims for Mach 1.6, or 1,218 mph, at about 60,000 feet. During these tests, a traditional supersonic chase plane will accompany the X-59, masking any quiet “thump” effects. SpaceX’s Starship V3 test flight last week achieved much of its objectives, but the FAA ordered a pause on further Starship flights while investigating the mishap.
