NASA introduces its newest astronauts: 10 chosen from more than 8,000 applicants
""You are America's best and brightest, and we're going to need America's best and brightest because we have a bold exploration plan for the future,""
""Some are challenging our leadership in space, say like the Chinese ... We are going to win.""
""[They were] called the newcomers "distinguished" and "exceptional.""
Ten new astronauts were introduced at Johnson Space Center in Houston after selection from more than 8,000 applicants to support moon and potential Mars missions. The incoming class includes six women and four men, the first NASA intake with more women than men. Class members include a geologist who worked on the Curiosity Mars rover and a SpaceX engineer who has already flown on a privately funded orbital mission featuring a private spacewalk. The group will undergo two years of training before becoming eligible for flight and will join 41 active U.S. astronauts.
