"3I/ATLAS will pass closest to Earth on December 19, 2025,"
"Fortunately, this date coincides with a new Moon when the view of the sky will not be contaminated by moonlight, making it an ideal observing night for Earth-based telescopes."
"Observations are expected to continue for several more months as 3I/ATLAS heads out of the solar system,"
Interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is moving rapidly through the solar system and is broadly considered a comet despite alternative theories. The object will make its closest approach to Earth on December 19, 2025, at roughly 167 million miles, about 1.5 astronomical units. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope imaged 3I/ATLAS on November 30 from 178 million miles using the Wide Field Camera 3, revealing a blue-glowing coma of ice and dust. Coordinated observations from hundreds of observatories, including Hubble, Webb, and ESA’s JUICE spacecraft, are planned. Observations will continue for several months as the object departs the solar system.
