Meteor explodes over Massachusetts, setting off loud booms
The meteor entered and broke up over northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire just after 2pm (1806 GMT). NASA estimated the breakup energy at about 300 tons of TNT, explaining loud booms heard across the region. The object was traveling at 75,000 miles per hour (more than 120,000 km/h) at an altitude of 40 miles when it fragmented. The event was not linked to any currently active meteor shower and was not a re-entry of space debris or a satellite. Residents reported the booms were strong enough to shake houses, and social media reflected widespread alarm.
