The extension, the second such contract Inmarsat has signed with Northrop Grumman, will see MEV-2 provide satellite transportation, repositioning and maintenance services to Intelsat in geosynchronous orbit. The latest extension will see the aging yet still operational IS-10-02 given an additional nine years of service life, courtesy of MEV-2.
The MEV program aims to prolong the operational lifespan of satellites running low on fuel by providing in-orbit extension services. MEV-1, launched in 2019, had successfully docked with IS-901 in 2020, and MEV-2 performed a similar operation with IS-10-02 in 2021. Both MEVs are instrumental in extending the satellite's useful life.
