According to their simulations, the scientists claim that their skip-gliding method could increase the range of hypersonic missiles by as much as 34%, along with a flight time increase of 28%. This technique is expected to enable missiles to strike deeper into US territory, shifting operational capabilities from regional conflicts to global operations.
The technique draws inspiration from previous aerospace projects like the Silbervogel space plane and the Dyna-Soar project, which aimed at achieving high-speed travel over vast distances through similar skipping methods. Although these projects were never realized, their principles are now being utilized in modern research.
