"Novelty is defined as a combination of concepts or topics that is unusual [and] that people have not worked on [before]," says Philipp Koellinger, a social geneticist at the Free University of Amsterdam and president of the DeSci Foundation. This definition underscores the platform's purpose: to identify and promote innovative research that expands academic exploration.
Koellinger emphasizes the broader impact of the novelty scores: "By releasing these scores for millions of papers, we aim to encourage academics to explore the literature more broadly and consider topics they might normally overlook." This reflects the platform's commitment to diversity in research topics.
Since its launch in September, DeSci Publish has assigned novelty scores to over 50 million manuscripts cataloged by OpenAlex. This extensive reach showcases the potential influence the platform can have on scientific publishing and research.
Koellinger states, "The novelty scores could provide authors with more data to showcase the potential impact of their work," highlighting the platform's role in enhancing authors' visibility and relevance in a competitive academic landscape.
