Cal Poly SLO alum to pilot first moon mission in 53 years
""We believe it's the destiny of humans to explore and to reach beyond our own confines. By returning to the Moon, we will be taking the next steps in human exploration to learn how to live on the surface of another world.""
""We still call amazing things that humans do moonshots, and now our generation is going to get to have one of our own.""
""The lessons learned throughout the mission will pave the way for humans to return to the lunar surface.""
A team of four astronauts is set to embark on a 10-day mission to the moon's far side, the first since Apollo 17 in 1972. The mission aims to prepare for future human landings on the moon and Mars. Victor Glover, the pilot, will be the first Black man to circumnavigate the moon, while Christina Koch will be the first woman. This mission is part of NASA's Artemis program, which seeks to explore more of the Moon and establish a foundation for deep space exploration.
