The San Jose Sharks traded their leading scorer, Fabian Zetterlund, to the Ottawa Senators ahead of the NHL trade deadline. In exchange, they received forwards Zack Ostapchuk and Noah Gregor, along with a second-round pick in 2025. Grier emphasized the importance of Ostapchuk, noting his potential as a future third-line center. The Sharks are aiming to rebuild with young talent, having already recognized the need for size and physicality in their lineup as they struggle at the bottom of the league standings.
"Just something we felt like we needed to do and have a fit for our roster and roster construction moving forward," Grier said of trading Zetterlund.
"To add a 21-year-old centerman who can fit in behind (Celebrini and Smith) in this league, you can see it. In the long term, that's three pretty good centers, 21 and under."
