Roupp to start SF Giants' first Cactus League game; Murphy still hampered by oblique injury
Briefly

Landen Roupp has been announced as the starter for the San Francisco Giants' Cactus League opener against the Texas Rangers. He is in competition for the fifth spot in the Giants' starting rotation, which includes younger pitchers like Kyle Harrison and Hayden Birdsong. Roupp's performance last season included a 3.58 ERA across 23 games. The Giants are preparing him as a starter but offer flexibility, possibly transitioning him to bullpen roles depending on team needs. Roupp is also developing a new cutter pitch.
Despite oscillating between Triple-A Sacramento and San Francisco, Roupp posted a 3.58 ERA and 3.42 FIP with 47 strikeouts over 50 1/3 innings.
Melvin said the team will build Roupp up as a starter for the time being. You can always build guys up as starters and put guys into the bullpen depending on need.
