"The likeliest scenario would see righty Matt Waldron bumped from the roster. The 29-year-old knuckleballer opened the season on the injured list and has been hit hard since his return. In five appearances (three starts) he's pitched 21 1/3 innings and been tagged for 22 runs (9.28 ERA) on 32 hits and seven walks. He's set down 18 of his 103 opponents (17.5%) on strikes."
Lucas Giolito is expected to make his Padres debut this weekend after signing a one-year deal in the offseason. The contract includes a $3MM base salary with $5MM in incentives. Giolito has made four minor league starts while ramping up after missing spring training, posting 17 innings with a 4.76 ERA, a 19.5% strikeout rate, and a 7.8% walk rate. His most recent start was stronger, as he threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks against an Athletics Double-A affiliate. His arrival creates roster constraints because none of the five current starters can be optioned, and only a few relievers have minor league options. Matt Waldron is the likeliest candidate to be removed after struggling since returning from the injured list.
