Melina Polk, Marcus Polk's daughter, was 17 on Oct. 24, 2016, and present at the Glen Park home before and during the shooting. She testified that the family atmosphere had been positive and that a dispute occurred about Polk's presence before she heard two gunshots from upstairs and hid in a closet. Starr Gul, Polk's former wife, testified that Polk was cheerful and good-natured the weekend before the shooting. Epps says he shot Polk in self-defense after Polk entered the home that afternoon. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins and Omid Talai attended the proceedings. During a lunch recess, about 20 supporters gathered at the Hall of Justice urging charges be dropped; Epps appeared emotional.
