Waymo is set to launch self-driving car mapping of Market Street in San Francisco, a move supported by Mayor Daniel Lurie as part of an initiative to improve accessibility in the downtown area. Lurie stated this is a step toward urban evolution, aimed at providing sustainable transit solutions for residents and visitors. The mapping will commence with human drivers before transitioning to fully autonomous rides. However, this decision follows concerns over curtailing Muni services due to a significant budget deficit, raising questions about the balance between new mobility options and existing public transport priorities.
"Market Street runs through the heart of our city, and we're making sure it continues to evolve with the times," Lurie said in a press release. "By welcoming Waymo, we're adding another safe and sustainable way to access shopping, theaters, hotels, and restaurants."
Tekedra Mawakana, Waymo's co-CEO, praised the decision. "We're honored that Mayor Lurie has invited us to serve as a mobility option on San Francisco's historic Market Street," he said.
City officials emphasized that Muni operations on Market Street will remain a priority. Julie Kirschbaum stated, "Our number one goal is to ensure all transportation options continue to move safely, reliably, and efficiently along the Market Street corridor."
The decision comes one week after the SFMTA Board of Directors preliminarily approved a plan to curtail Muni service on Market Street as the agency faces a projected $320 million deficit next year.
