A pair of freeway crashes involving big rigs created significant traffic disruptions Wednesday morning, with the California Highway Patrol closing lanes on major connectors and highways.
The first accident occurred at 4:55 a.m., involving a big rig that overturned and spilled its load of sod, grass, and dirt across Highway 24.
As commuters were diverted from Highway 24, they were advised to take northbound state Highway 13 through Berkeley, with alternative paths to reconnect to Interstate 80.
With both accidents causing major delays, northbound I-238 traffic was rerouted to southbound I-880, while the CHP anticipated cleanup would extend into the morning hours.
