Summer in San Francisco has been linked to important events for centuries, such as its founding in 1776 and the Summer of Love in 1967. This cultural backdrop fostered the ideals of peace and community, leading to the formation of the People's Food System and Rainbow Grocery Cooperative in 1975 by a political group and an ashram. Rainbow Grocery thrives on the mission of providing affordable vegetarian food while supporting local economies. It has moved locations to accommodate growth, finally settling at 1745 Folsom Street in 1996.
The vision for a People's Food System emerged from ideals of peace, love, freedom, and anti-war sentiments championed by the Summer of Love participants.
In August of 1975, the People's Food System political group and an ashram founded Rainbow Grocery Cooperative, a worker-owned and operated co-op.
Rainbow Grocery Cooperative has seen several locations since its founding, moving from 3159 16th Street in 1975 to its current location at 1745 Folsom Street established in 1996.
The cooperative's mission focuses on providing affordable vegetarian food products and supporting local organic farmers and businesses, aiming for minimal ecological and social impact.
