Sunnyvale officials faced criticism after asking the "Palestine Palette" art booth to leave a children's festival for displaying an unapproved poster depicting a historic map of Palestine. The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned this action as censorship of Palestinian culture and urged the city for a public apology and further training on equity and inclusion. The event, intended to celebrate diversity, saw local artist coalition Soul of my Soul organize the booth to introduce children to Palestinian art. City spokesperson Rachel Davis stated that all materials need prior approval and that they are dedicated to open dialogue moving forward.
We are deeply concerned that Palestinian culture was singled out for censorship at an event meant to celebrate diversity, said CAIR San Francisco Bay Area Executive Director Zahra Billoo.
As we continue to gather information, it is very clear that this is an opportunity to learn from one another and determine how we can improve, said city spokesperson Rachel Davis.
