During recent protests in San Francisco against ICE raids, UC Berkeley student journalists Aarya Mukherjee and Sam Grotenstein were detained by police, even while displaying marked press credentials. They faced physical force during their coverage and were held for varying durations. Their challenges intensified due to communication issues stemming from the crowd dynamics. The situation escalated into unlawful assembly as authorities clamped down post-demonstrations, reinforcing concerns around press freedoms and police conduct during civil unrest.
At one point, one of the officers grabbed my arm and ... threw me backwards. I was wearing clearly identified press credentials and announced myself as press.
Later in the night, they were both detained - Mukherjee for about 20 minutes and Grotenstein for over an hour, due to having only a digital press pass.
Our managing editor had to drive out from Berkeley in an attempt to get [Grotenstein] released.
The San Francisco Police Department previously told SFGATE officers made arrests of individuals who refused to comply.
