A proposed legislation in San Francisco aims to tackle homelessness by requiring each district to establish at least one shelter or behavioral health center by June 2026. This initiative responds to concerns that certain neighborhoods like the Tenderloin bear the main burden of providing services. While some residents support this collaborative approach, others express apprehension about forcing shelters into their districts. Supervisor Bilal Mahmood emphasizes the need for city-wide responsibility and resource allocation to address the homelessness crisis effectively, as certain districts currently lack shelters.
"This is a crisis that has to be addressed by the whole city in a collaborative, cohesive fashion," San Francisco District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood said.
"For too long, the Tenderloin... has borne the brunt of that responsibility for homeless services, Tenderloin, SOMA, Bayview, Mission," Supervisor Mahmood said.
"I feel like we are spending a lot of money, but clearly everything that we are doing isn't working, so I feel like we should try different solutions and find something that works to support this population," said Becky Caja.
"I always see homeless people... it’s pretty sad to see," said Vlad Bets.
