SF SoMa businesses say weekend Caltrans roadwork on I-80 chased customers away: 'Kind of slow'
"Caltrans says the giant 1.6 mile pavement resurfacing project is moving forward, on schedule. 'There's still a lot of work to do, we still want to make sure the public and motorists stay out of the area, progress has been made quite well,' said Caltrans spokesperson, Lori Shepherd."
"'I was like, what's going on? it's kind of slow,' said Jabriel Isa. Jabriel Isa at Heyma Yemini Coffee Shop on Ninth Street says his usual weekend crowd are no shows, likely due to road work alerts and detours."
"'On a sunny weekend, it's usually packed and busy. It'll be three of us working nonstop, today it's been nothing,' said Max Freeborn at Mike's Bikes on Howard Street, noting a 70 percent drop in business."
A 1.6 mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 80 in San Francisco is closed for a major repaving project, scheduled to reopen Monday. Drivers are experiencing detours and traffic delays in SoMa. Caltrans reports that the project is on schedule, despite predictions of significant traffic issues. Local businesses are suffering from decreased foot traffic and sales due to the roadwork. Some business owners have noted a dramatic drop in customers, impacting their weekend revenue significantly.
