San Francisco is moving forward with a plan to remove RVs from city streets under Mayor Daniel Lurie's initiative. The city's Budget and Finance Committee voted to advance this proposal amid concerns from RV residents and advocates. Many residents, like Lucy and Jose Rivas, argue that their RVs provide essential shelter, especially for those who lost jobs during the pandemic. Critics highlight issues caused by parked RVs, such as blocked sidewalks and health risks to the community. The city intends to issue permits for parking RVs for up to two hours a day.
"I call my home my tiny beautiful home. We are not hurting anybody. We are not costing the city anything," said Lucy.
"It is difficult. It is too narrow. I'm still in the RV," said Rivas.
"The proliferation of large vehicles has led to blocked sidewalks, compromised traffic circulation and health hazards that impact our neighborhoods," said Kunal Modi.
The city's plan includes giving RV residents a permit to park on the streets for up to two hours a day.
