A one-day picket occurred at Ghirardelli Square on Valentine's Day as Unite Here Local 2 members sought a new contract with higher wages and retention of their union-run health plan. About 40 dishwashers, cashiers and candymakers have been bargaining for months. The union says Ghirardelli is pushing employees to an employer health plan. A 29-year employee reported inability to afford San Francisco living costs on current pay. Tourists reacted with surprise. Ghirardelli's parent company said its focus is reaching an agreement that supports employees and ensures long-term business success.
