San Francisco Fleet Week will continue despite the federal government shutdown grounding most U.S. military events. A recruiting ceremony in the Bay Area swore in new servicemembers from several branches. Recruit Emeliia Johnson of Brentwood enlisted in the Navy to pursue personal growth rather than college. Most Fleet Week events involving the U.S. military have been paused or grounded, including the Navy's Blue Angels. Unlike in 2013 when Fleet Week was canceled during a shutdown, officials report that visiting ships from Canada and Colombia and the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will participate. Local businesses worry about potentially smaller crowds.
