He is a member of the California LGBTQ+ Caucus and has been a leading advocate for LGTBQ+ rights. If elected, Wiener would be the first openly gay person to represent San Francisco in Congress. Before his election to the state Legislature, Wiener served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and worked as a deputy city attorney in the San Francisco City Attorney's Office."

Pelosi, age 85, has not said whether she will seek reelection, and age considerations have become prominent among Democrats. Wiener, elected to the state Senate in 2016, is known for promoting increased housing density, is active in the California LGBTQ+ Caucus, and would be the first openly gay San Francisco member of Congress. Gavin Newsom recently signed Wiener's Senate Bill 79.
