Santa Cruz coast: Hazardous waves prompt water rescues, Capitola beach closure
Briefly

Hazardous surf conditions prompted beach closures and multiple water rescues near Capitola and Santa Cruz. Authorities warned beachgoers of dangers such as debris in the water and high waves. By noon, emergency crews were responding to water rescues every few minutes, with alerts urging people to stay out of the water. Despite numerous rescues, no serious injuries or fatalities had been reported. Local photographer Mark Woodward highlighted the risks, reflecting on past tragedies caused by underestimating ocean hazards along the coastline.
Multiple water rescues have already occurred; huge waves broke around high tide, prompting emergency personnel to rescue surfers trapped near Pleasure Point.
The cliffs are nothing to mess around with, Woodward said, explaining how he's personally witnessed at least two deaths near Lighthouse Point.
