San Jose officials push for South Vietnam flag emoji - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

San Jose City Council voted unanimously to ask the Unicode Consortium to add the flag of South Vietnam as an emoji. This request reflects the need for representation of Vietnamese refugees in the U.S., especially in the context of their historical significance since the Vietnam War. The existing emoji of Vietnam's official flag does not resonate with many refugees who identify more with the South Vietnam flag, which symbolizes freedom and remembrance for them. Councilmember Bien Doan emphasized the request highlights the importance of diversity in digital communication.
For many Vietnamese refugees and their families, this flag is a powerful symbol of freedom, democracy and remembrance. As emojis become an essential part of our digital communications, it's time the diversity of our community is reflected there too.
I'm very proud of my former country. We must recognize the symbol that represents our struggles and our hopes.
