San Jose approves plan to revamp Columbus Park, sweep homeless encampments
Briefly

The San Jose City Council unanimously approved a major overhaul of Columbus Park, aiming to revitalize the area, which has long been home to a large homeless encampment. Mayor Matt Mahan indicated that individuals living in the park would need to relocate for the revitalization efforts, which aims to make the park more family-friendly and a center for youth sports. However, homeless advocates criticized the plan, arguing that the city has not provided sufficient alternative housing and is simply seeking to displace the unhoused ahead of significant events in the city.
"The city doesn't care. The city just wants to make all these unhoused people disappear in time for the World Cup and Super Bowl," said Shaunn Cartwright.
"I do think this is progress. It isn't perfect, but we're doing our best to balance many different needs in our community," Mahan said.
