The renovation of the Castro Theatre has faced significant budget overruns, with costs now expected to exceed $35 million, more than double the initial budget of $15 million. The theatre, which has been closed since 2024, was meant to reopen by summer 2025, but the timeline is now pushed to later in the year, after significant events like the Frameline film festival. Renovations include installing a new HVAC system, film screen, and upgrading electrical services, with delays attributed to utility company issues and project complexity.
"Originally budgeted at $15 million, currently it is expected that Another Planet will spend in excess of $35 million on this project," APE spokesperson David Perry wrote in a statement.
"Bottom line: as soon as possible we want to return the Castro to serving the LGBT, cultural and Castro small business community," he wrote.
"Our current issue is PG&E," APE project manager Margaret Casey said during the Castro Merchants Association's meeting in February, according to the Bay Area Reporter.
"We're working proactively and professionally..." a spokesperson for the utility company told the Bay Area Reporter.
