Daniel D. Chapman, affectionately known as Dan, passed away peacefully on June 23 at the age of 96 after a year of declining health, during which he was cared for by his partner Clare. Dan was born on February 26, 1929, in San Francisco and grew up riding his bike around the city. He excelled in sports during high school and received a football scholarship to the University of Texas but later transferred to Cal due to an injury. His commitment to social justice was exemplified by his participation in the 1964 Freedom Summer initiative. Dan worked in physics research at UC Berkeley and had a passion for history, visiting ancient ruins with replicas of historical maps. He is survived by his partner Clare, children, grandchildren, and extended family and friends.
