'Reckless nighttime behavior': Hawaii suspends popular beach camping
Briefly

The indefinite suspension of camping at Sand Island State Recreation Area is due to reckless nighttime behavior from visitors, impacting public safety and park maintenance.
"This behavior is overwhelming the park caretaker and maintenance crew who clean up the campsites and park. It is jeopardizing public safety and diminishing the quality of the park," said Division of State Parks Administrator Curt Cottrell.
Despite having a permit system in place, visitors have disregarded regulations, staying past their permit expiration and exceeding camp limits, exacerbating tensions among locals.
"DLNR manages lands for the use of the public, not for the use of homeless at the park," highlighting the state's concern over local homelessness issues.
