Parking ban to continue near Calif. icon made famous by HBO show
Briefly

Bixby Bridge, a beloved landmark located south of Carmel, has gained notoriety as a pop culture icon, especially due to the HBO series "Big Little Lies." However, following the severe storm in March 2024, significant damage forced closures on Highway 1, stranding over 2,000 locals and tourists. The repairs, expected to be completed by early July, have restricted access to Old Coast Road, making it difficult for visitors to safely capture photos of the bridge. While the situation poses challenges, it has inadvertently reduced traffic congestion around the area, improving overall safety.
"It looks like it'll be early July," Caltrans spokesperson Kevin Drabinski told SFGATE on Tuesday of the road's expected reopening, describing the storm-caused incident on March 30, 2024. "... If you look back to see what the storm did, there was no road there. There was just this empty space. ... [Our] geotechnical [crew] got out there the very next day and had to make a determination on whether the northbound lane could take traffic."
The temporary closure of Old Coast Road during the road repair project made it tougher for visitors to get out of their cars to take photos of the legendary span.
Bixby Bridge, the iconic concrete span bridge about 15 miles south of downtown Carmel, was completed in 1932 to connect the coastal region via roadway.
As a result of the storm's damage, more than 2,000 locals and tourists were stranded in Big Sur, as a southern portion of Big Sur Highway 1, near Regent's Slide, was already closed.
