Demand has faltered, with condo sales dropping over 30% in early 2016, accompanied by potential price reductions and slipping rents. Proposed new housing units total 17,800 but construction timelines for many projects extend for decades. Despite a drop from the record of 63,400 units earlier this year, there is an increase from 54,600 units year-over-year according to Planning's data.
With new proposals for slightly fewer units of housing than finished construction last quarter, the overall pipeline of apartments and condos under development in San Francisco slipped by a hundred to 63,300.
At the same time, demand for the current crop of new construction condos in San Francisco has slowed, with sales down over 30 percent in the first half of 2016.
